In short: There is no universal RBI-mandated cutoff. Lenders combine credit history with income, debt, down payment, loan structure and property assessment.

Credit Score Required for a Home Loan in India

What credit score is required?

No RBI rule sets one universal minimum score for a home loan. Each lender combines credit bureau data with income, debt, age, banking conduct, down payment and property assessment. A higher score may improve approval or pricing, but never guarantees either.

What lenders review

  • Payment history and overdue accounts.
  • Credit utilisation and unsecured debt.
  • Age and mix of credit accounts.
  • Recent loan and card enquiries.
  • Settled, written-off or disputed entries.
  • Co-borrower reports and income stability.

Improve the report before applying

Download reports from recognised credit information companies, dispute factual errors, pay on time, reduce revolving card balances, avoid multiple applications and do not close useful old accounts only to chase a number. Genuine improvement takes time.

Score is not the complete decision

A strong score cannot fix unaffordable EMI or defective property title. A thin-file borrower can sometimes qualify with documented income and stronger security, subject to lender policy. Compare KFS, APR and sanction conditionsβ€”not only approval.

Fraud warning

No agent can legally guarantee approval or instantly erase correct negative history. Pay only through verified lender channels and never share OTPs.

Frequently asked questions

Is 750 mandatory for every home loan?

No. Lenders use their own policies and assess the full profile; no universal RBI minimum applies.

Does checking my own report reduce my score?

Obtaining your own consumer report is generally different from a lender credit enquiry.

Can a credit-report error be corrected?

Yes. Raise a dispute with the relevant credit information company and lender that supplied the data.

Does a high score guarantee the lowest rate?

No. Pricing also depends on income, loan structure, property, lender policy and other risk factors.
